Uganda Coffee Market Trends 2025: Quality, Growth & Global Positioning

Uganda Climbing the Ranks Quality and Global Recognition

In a landmark achievement, Uganda’s coffee has been ranked third best in the world by professional coffee tasters in a survey involving 16 major coffee-growing countries in this October 2025.

This accolade underscores the improved cup quality, aroma, balance, and processing standards of Uganda’s Arabica and Robusta beans offering strong validation to global buyers seeking organic, natural, well-processed coffee.

This quality recognition arrives as Uganda steers a period of robust demand and shifting market dynamics. As traditional origins face climate disruptions, Uganda is positioning itself as a reliable, high-quality source for East Africa, Africa, and the world at large.

On the other hand, Uganda’s export momentum in 2025 is undeniable. In May 2025 alone, Uganda exported over 793,44560-kilobagsof coffee valuedat US$243.95 million, while the last UCDA monthly report of August 2025 indicated, 855,441 60-kilo bags of coffee, surpassing Ethiopia and becoming Africa’s top coffee exporter for that period.  Over the 12 months to mid-2025, Uganda shipped millions of bags, generating over $2.2 billion in export earnings.

In the first quarter of 2025, Uganda’s shipments reached 555,756 60-kg bags in February alone a 28% year on year jump fueled by high global prices and strong buyer demand.

These trends suggest Uganda is not just growing in volume, but also capturing higher value due to better quality and more diverse markets.

Shifting Markets: Europe, Asia & Africa

Historically, Europe has been Uganda’s main coffee buyer, in recent years it continues to absorb a large share of exports especially Italy which accounts for a significant portion.

Yet, Uganda is now making strategic inroads into Asia particularly Japan, where it displayed its full coffee narrative at the SCAJ 2025 exhibition in Tokyo.

Across Africa moreover, regional demand is rising helping reduce overreliance on distant markets, thus, Uganda’s geographical position gives it a competitive edge for supply to neighboring countries.

Quality, Sustainability & Value Addition

Uganda's growth story is not just about export numbers, it’s increasingly about value and sustainability, across the industry, processors are placing more emphasis on local roasting, branding, and sphere product lines to retain greater portions of the value chain.

Farmers are being trained in better post-harvest practices and exporters are pushing for traceability, exceptional level quality control and certifications such as organic or fair trade. These steps strengthen confidence among specialty buyers searching for natural, well-prepared coffee.

Challenges & Risks in the Path Forward

No market expansion is without hurdles. Uganda faces challenges including:

Logistics costs: Being landlocked means export routes rely on neighbors and ports which can raise costs.

Pest & disease pressures: Coffee Wilt, red blister disease, and other threats require resilient varieties and good farm management.

Competition from major origins: Brazil, Vietnam, Colombia still dominate global supply. Nevertheless, Uganda must continue elevating quality and reliability to stay competitive.

What Buyers & Investors Should Watch

Quality over quantity: Buyers focusing on premium Arabica and traceable Robusta will find Uganda increasingly appealing.

Emerging markets: Keep an eye on buyer growth in Asia and Africa, which will demand more specialty lots.

Support for value addition: Uganda’s push toward roasting, blending, and packaging locally means opportunity for brand partnerships.

Recognition of excellence: The third best in the world ranking gives Uganda a marketing edge uses it in sourcing conversations.
